Our club meets for lunch each Thursday at noon in the Iowa Room at the University Club.

On Thursday, April 11, 2013 our speaker will be Prof. Carolyn Brown from the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Iowa.  Prof. Brown's research area focuses on auditory physiology with an emphasis in electrically evoked potentials and cochlear implants.


Lanes Recipients of the 2013 Service to Mankind Award

James (“Jim”) Lane and Catherine Becker Lane have been selected to receive the “2013 Service to Mankind Award” presented by the Old Capitol Sertoma Club.  Formal presentation of the award to Mr. and Mrs. Lane will be made at a banquet to be held on Thursday, May 10, 2013 at the University Club in Iowa City, Iowa.  The Lanes are being recognized for their many contributions to our community.  Both Jim and Catherine Lane have been generous in donating their time and resources to make our community a better place.

Catherine Lane’s many community contributions have included leadership roles with Pathways Adult Day Care Center, Men Who Cook, the Iowa City School District Athletic Booster Organization, and Hope Lodge.  From 2011 to the present Catherine has been a member of the Dancing for the Stars Gala Planning Committee.
  

Catherine received the Volunteer Fund Raiser of the Year Award from the Eastern Iowa Chapter Association for Fund Raising Professionals for her work on the Pathways Relocation and the Men Who Cook event. In 2006 she received the “9 Who Care Award” from KCRG for her work with Pathways, Men Who Cook, and the Iowa City School District Athletic Booster Organizations.

Jim’s community involvement has included volunteering for the American Cancer Society, the United Way of Johnson County, and Iowa City Noon Rotary.

Jim received the Sword of Hope Award from the American Cancer Society for his leadership in fundraising for the Hope Lodge. In 1999, Jim was Chosen Volunteer of the Year by the United Way for his leading work on Board and Staff Reorganization and Strategic Planning. 
   

Jim and Catherine have provided support to a variety of organizations in the Iowa City area over the years and both have co-chaired a yearlong celebration of the 150th anniversary of Zion Lutheran Church in Johnson County.

Jim Lane was raised in Louisville, Kentucky.  He graduated from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1966.  He joined Procter and Gamble in Iowa City in 1966. 

Jim and Catherine met in Heidelberg, Germany in 1968. She was studying German at Heidelberg University in her junior year of college. Jim was in the US Army and assigned to European Headquarters in Heidelberg.

Catherine finished her studies at Augustana and Jim went back to Proctor and Gamble in Iowa City. They married in 1971 and left Iowa City in 1973 for other assignments with Procter and Gamble. In 1983, Jim was assigned to help build and manage a Pampers plant in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Catherine and their three children, ages 6, 8 and 10, moved to Jeddah in 1984 and the family lived there for three and one-half years. They all returned to Iowa City in 1987 when Jim was appointed Plant Manager of the Iowa City Proctor and Gamble Plant. Jim left Procter and Gamble in 1994 to become an Investment Consultant with Heartland Investment in Iowa City.

Catherine returned to the workplace in 1990 as development director for the Johnson County Historical Society. She then worked as development director for the Lisbon School District Foundation (1991-1994) and Marion School District Foundation (1995-1999) where she re-energized the Foundations and led successful capital campaigns.

Jim and Catherine have three children, Todd, Carrie and David, and four grandchildren.  All three children are Division I Athletic Coaches.  Todd is a coach in Track and Field at LSU; Carrie is a coach in Track and Field at the University of Nebraska; and David coaches Women’s Basketball at Drake University.
